Teach First

Teach First is and independent charity launched in 2002 to bring excellent young teachers into secondary schools across the UK.

Our mission is to address educational disadvantage by transforming exceptional graduates into effective, inspirational teachers and leaders in all fields.

Statistics show in 2007, all 19 year old pupils with professional parents were twice as likely to be in further education, higher education or training, than their peers’ parents who were unemployed or working in routine occupations.

Teach First aims to close this achievement gap by helping top graduates become excellent teachers in challenging schools, committed to leading classrooms and overcoming the obstacles of deprivation in order to increase the access, achievement and aspirations for the thousands of young people that lack the opportunities that many others take for granted. Long-term, our goal is to develop our Ambassadors into leaders who will create the systemic change necessary to improve these statistics in a national scale.

We believe that by giving exceptional graduates the opportunity to teach and make a difference in the most challenged schools, we are equipping tomorrow’s leaders with the motivation, skills and understanding to address educational disadvantage on all levels.

King's College Extended Medical Degree Programme

The Extended Medical Degree Programme (EMDP) is a six-year medical degree programme designed for students attending non-selective state schools or FE colleges in designated boroughs in London and the south east which have high levels of social disadvantage. The number of places available is approximately 50.

EMDP students cover the same topics, at the same level of detail, sit the same examinations and are required to achieve the same pass mark as the students on the standard MBBS programme.

The first two tears of the course is taught over three years in order to allow the students additional time to cover medically related aspects of chemistry, numeracy and writing skills, together with the more difficult concepts in the medical course itself. In their final three years, EMDP students experience the clinical parts of the course at exactly the same pace as the conventional students and will be indistinguishable from them.

The medical qualification obtained by EMDP students at the end of their course will be identical to that obtained by students on the five-year course.

National Council for Work Experience

The National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) promotes, supports and develops quality work experience for the benefit of students, organisations and the economy.

Recent research undertaken by NCWE shows that increasingly employers see offering work experience as an effective way of recruiting graduates, since both have a chance to see what each other have to offer. This trend is likely to continue and demonstrates the growing importance of getting some form of work experience before leaving university. Students also benefit by gaining an understanding of what employers are looking for when they come to recruit graduates and can therefore make more informed career choices.

The importance of undertaking a period of work experience, if you are a student, or providing work placement opportunities, if you are an employer, is growing year-on-year.

Employers want to recruit graduates who have some knowledge of the working world and this is something that students are becoming more aware of. A period of work experience can benefit both students and employers offering students the opportunity to put theory learning into practice and employers the opportunity to see what graduates are capable of.

The Quality Mark is an accreditation awarded by the National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) to recognise employers who have reached the required standard of work experience provision.

Russell Group Outreach Programmes

The Russell Group of Universities, supported by its Association for Widening Participation, believes that it is part of its social responsibility to increase and widen participation in higher education. The educational opportunities offered by the leading universities that form the Russell Group are high quality and distinctive, and the Group is concerned to ensure that the best students with the greatest potential can benefit from these opportunities.

The Russell Group universities are also very active in raising aspirations and awareness of potential students on behalf of the whole HE sector, and have made significant and substantial contributions to date.

Russell Group universities run master-classes in many subjects and Saturday schools in subjects such as Mathematics, English and Chemistry. These are generally offered to students in the final two years of school/college. Summer schools offer potential students first-hand experience of university life. While academic programmes enable participants either to try out new subjects or to increase their knowledge of familiar subjects through intensive study, summer schools also provide programmes of study skills and advice about university life and the application process.

Russell Group universities pay particular attention to induction and to on-course support both academic and personal, and after graduation a Russell Group education confers an advantage in the graduate employment market. Russell Group universities seek to equip all students, whatever their background, with the knowledge and skills to meet their career aspirations.

UK Career Academy Foundation

Career Academies UK leads and supports a movement of over 700 employers and over 120 schools and colleges, working together to raise the aspirations of 16 to 19-year-olds. 95% of Career Academy graduates go on to higher education, or an equivalent level of work-related training, compared with a predicted 40% based on their GCSE performance at the start of the programme.

Career Academy students follow a rigorous two-year curriculum equivalent to at least three A levels. It can include vocational qualifications such as BTEC or Applied A levels, as well as the Advanced Diploma, or a combination of these, depending on local need. Importantly, these all feature in the National Qualifications Framework and so are recognised for entrance to university or employment.

The whole Career Academy class follows the same programme of study with its various curriculum enhancements, such as visiting speakers or “Guru Lectures”, mentoring by employee volunteers, employer-led seminars and the “jewel in the crown” six-week paid internship which takes place in the summer between the two years of the course based on a standard working hour week in a real operating environment and aiming to use the skills and knowledge the student has learned in school/college.
